With all the excitement of developing and making your products buying care labels for your fabric clothing, crafts or toys, probably won’t be the first thing on your mind. However, it will invariably be a requirement if you are bringing your goods to the market. You might think about branding first but there are several other things you need to consider when selling and labelling clothing items.

  • Fibre content
  • Country of origin
  • Care instructions
  • Flammability (especially if you are selling children’s clothing/nightwear)

A sample of fabric clothing care labels

Fibre content

Example of a care labels with language translationIt is important to know your fabrics. UK legislation requires the main fibre components of clothing to be clearly displayed in percentages e.g. 100% Wool or 90% Cotton, 10% Polyester

A Guide to Textile Labelling Regulations – These regulations state that all information must be understandable to the customer so if you are selling into a variety of countries, other than the UK, you may need to consider multiple language translations.

Country of origin

It is not compulsory to display the country of origin within the EU but trading regulations often insist that this is a requirement in order to ensure that the customer is not misled by where products have been manufactured.

Customers are increasingly concerned about where their products come from so adding “Made in UK” or “Made in Britain” to your labels could be a good marketing tool.

Care Instructions

Care instructions are not mandatory in the UK. However, it is encouraged and is a good idea if you want your fabrics to continue to look good after purchase. After all happy customers are often returning customers. It may not be immediately obvious to them how they should look after their clothing so clear, concise care instructions can be very useful.

It is the general convention to include 5 care symbols:

  • Wash temperature / type (e.g. f 30°C cool wash)
  • Bleaching options (e.g. 9 Do not bleach)
  • Drying options (e.g. 1 Cool tumble dry)
  • Ironing temperatures (e.g. + Medium iron)
  • Dry cleaning options (e.g. , Do not dry clean)

You should include symbols that are appropriate for your fabrics. Consider the maximum wash / tumble and iron temperatures your fabric will take (e.g. If you have a synthetic fibre blend then cool settings will probably be the most appropriate). If your garments are made from fabric that is likely to distort when washed (e.g. heavy knitwear) then you could consider including instructions to dry flat or reshape whilst damp. Although not always necessary, adding extra instructions in wording can be very useful for your customer.

If you are unsure of the symbol meanings and there use here is a useful link to help explain everything: www.care-labelling.co.uk.

Flammability

This is an important consideration if you are selling children’s clothing and nightwear. You will need to comply with certain flammability standards (including BS-5722) depending on the type of garment you are selling. Here is a link to the relevant safety regulations: Nightwear (Safety) Regulations 1985

KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE will need to be displayed on your care labels in a clear, bold font in red text (10pt in size).

We hope you have found this information useful. We are happy to help. If you have any questions about fabric clothing labelling please contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

All of our labels are custom made to your requirements so we can add whatever information you need. Don’t worry if you need to fit a lot of wording on. We don’t limit the amount of text you can have and we’ll adjust the fabric label length to fit. Please take a look at our website where we have a variety of different label styles for you to choose from. Just let us know what you need and we’ll produce a design layout for you.

Carelabels is a West Yorkshire (UK) based company and we specialise in the manufacture of printed sewing labels for use on clothing and other fabric items. We have a wide range of customers from large fashion houses to home crafters based in the UK, mainland Europe and world wide.

Sewing labels uk - napkin close upSince starting the business in 2004 we have worked hard to develop our products and customer base. Customer service is extremely important to us and we aim to provide the same high standard of service for all of our customers whether large or small.

If you just want a few labels for your sewing and craft projects we are happy to help. We often get compliments from customers saying that our labels have given a lovely finishing touch to their items. You never know a few gifts to friends and family might lead to a whole new business.

Design and Create Your Sewing Label

All of our labels are custom made to your requirements. If you send us your ideas we will work with you to design and create a label that exactly suits your needs. Don’t worry you don’t need to be a design expert. You don’t need to send us a full label layout. Just tell us in words what you would like on your sewing labels and we will generate a design layout for you. If you have a logo of your own that you would like to use please send it to us so that we can check whether it is suitable for printing. Simple, graphic images work best. Bear in mind that what looks good on paper may not translate well to fabric. If you include too much fine detail it can often get lost in the fabric weave. This is also the case with some of the finer script fonts so you need to consider this when choosing your font styles. Definition can sometimes be lost, so bolder is better.

Add a Logo and Colour to Your Sewing Label

If you would like to add a logo but don’t have a design of your own just give us an idea of the type of image you would like. We have hundreds of images on file so can usually find something suitable.  We’ll send you a selection to choose from. For all you crafters out there we have sewing machines, needles, yarn balls, crochet and knitting images. If you see something you like on our website just point it out and we can add it to your design. We can add up to 3 ink colours on your label and a lot of our images can be filled with colour. This means that if you use any of our stock images you can still add a bit of individuality. All of the available colours are shown on our website.

Sewing Label Printing Process

We use a digital printing process with a computer based design package. This enables us to produce short runs of labels with the minimum amount of waste. This also enables us to have a very quick turnaround and we can often despatch your labels within 24 hours of design approval. This has proved to be very popular with our customers and is often commented on in their feedback. All of our labels are printed on site in our UK office which means we have complete control over production and quality.

Regardless of whether you need 1000’s of labels at a time or just a few labels for craft or sewing projects we will always keep each design on file for you. We can easily add to or amend your designs. There is no need to worry if you want to make last minute changes or simply want to expand your label stock as your business grows. Our ability to produce small runs of sewing labels quickly means you can regularly assess your requirements for different products and just order when needed rather than having to plan far in advance.

Sewing Label Fabrics and Colours

We use soft polyester satin fabrics to produce our sewing labels. We like to provide a label quality that is as flexible as possible for our customers. Obviously if you are producing children’s clothing you don’t want a harsh, scratchy label and this is equally true if you are producing lingerie. There is little point in adding your branding if the label is immediately cut out because it causes discomfort.

We stock 3 label fabric colours (white, cream and black) in a variety of widths from 15mm up to 45mm. As already mentioned we have various ink colours for you to choose from.

Sewing Labelling Requirements

A lot of our customers opt for black text and then add a little colour to their branding. We can add red print if you need to include safety warnings. This will be important if you are labelling children’s toys and some clothing. If you require CE labelling and sequential batch numbers for trace ability we can add those too. Here is a link to government guidance Gov.uk website which you may find useful.

Sewing labels uk - CE bunnyIf you are selling items on a commercial basis you will need to meet certain labelling requirements. You will usually be required to add fibre/fabric composition but may need to add extra information according to the type of product and where you intend selling to. You may not be aware of this if you are just starting out. Your local Trading Standards office will be able to advise exactly what is needed. Here is a useful link giving labelling advice Textile Labelling Regulations from the Department for Business Innovation & Skills.

If you would like to add washing instructions just tell us what you need in words and we can add the relevant textile symbols. If you are unsure of the meanings here is a useful link www.care-labelling.co.uk

Sewing Label Style

The majority of our customers come to us for a combination label. They like to include care and content information, their brand and sometimes size details. This means less sewing and all relevant information is shown on one neat label. However, if you have multiple products or fabric types and want individual labels for care/content, branding and size we can provide those for you.

Once you have chosen your fabric colour and width the print details are entirely up to you. You can add as much text as you need. We will adjust the label length to fit accordingly. The label style will depend entirely upon your requirements too. We have a number of options.

  • Loop fold labels – are designed for you to fold in half and sew both ends into a seam (10mm sew space is included on each end). We usually supply these un-cut on a roll so that you can cut off and use as needed. These will need to be sewn into a seam to avoid fraying. We can also supply a cut and sealed version if this is more suitable for you. The design is divided on the label so that, once folded, you have a front and a back. Generally our customers request their branding on the front of the label and care/content on the reverse.
  • Single and 2 sided labels – are supplied cut and sealed. This avoids fraying and means that you only have to sew in one end of the label. 2 sided labels are useful if you need to include a lot of information. You may need to add multiple language translations for fabric composition and this can result in a lengthy label. We can provide booklet format labels in order to keep the label length to a minimum.
  • End fold labels – can be supplied un-cut on a roll. Your design will be placed in the centre of the label (usually in a horizontal format) and we will include 10mm sew space at each side. You then fold each end under to give a flat, single sided label. You will need to sew both ends to avoid fraying. We can also supply a cut and sealed version if you prefer. This type of label may be a good solution if you want to add some obvious branding to your items or important safety information that needs to be immediately visible.

Printing Process for Sew On Labels

We use a digital printing process with a computer based design package. This enables us to produce short runs of sew on labels with the minimum amount of waste. This also enables us to have a very quick turnaround and we can often despatch your sew on labels within 24 hours of design approval. This has proved to be very popular with our customers and is often commented on in their feedback.

All of our sew on labels are printed on site in our UK office which means we have complete control over production and quality. This has always been very important to us and is something we don’t intend to change. We endeavour to use UK fabric and ink suppliers where possible. We are always researching new possibilities too.

Fabric Colours for Sew On Labels

We use soft polyester satin fabrics to produce our sew on labels. We like to provide a label quality that is as flexible as possible for our customers. Obviously if you are producing children’s clothing you don’t want a harsh, scratchy label and this is equally true if you are producing lingerie. The sew on label style will depend entirely upon your requirements too. We have a number of options. We can supply sew in or sew on labels.

  • If you don’t have a seam on your items that you can sew into you may wish to have sew on labels instead. In this case we would suggest an end fold label or a single sided cut and sealed label.

End fold labels will usually be supplied un-cut on a roll. Your design will be placed in the centre of the label (usually in a horizontal format) and we will include 10mm sew space at each side. You then fold each end under to give a flat, single sided label. You will need to sew both ends to avoid fraying.

We can also supply a cut and sealed version which means no fraying and you can choose to have your label with or without extra sew space. Giving you the option to fold the ends under or leave the label flat. This gives a nice, neat label which you can sew on either at the two ends or all the way around for extra security. If you want to add some obvious branding to your items or important safety information that needs to be immediately visible this may be a good solution for you.

Carelabels is a Yorkshire (UK) based company. We specialise in the manufacture of printed care labels for clothes and other fabric items. We aim to cater for a wide range of customers, from those wanting thousands of labels for designer garments to those who just want a few for labelling their craft or sewing projects.

Care labels for clothes - labels on rollIf you make a lot of items for sale you will understand the need for labelling and the importance of branding for your business, but you might not have considered this if you are just starting out. With all the excitement of developing and making your products labelling probably won’t be the first thing on your mind. However, it will invariably be a requirement if you are bringing your goods to the market. Usually a simple wash care and content label will be sufficient to start with, but your local Trading Standards office will be able to advise you if you are not sure exactly what you need. CE and/or safety labelling is generally required for children’s toys and some clothing so this is something to be aware of. All of our labels are bespoke so we can work with you to add whatever information you require to prepare your products for sale.

Choice of Care Labels

You have a choice of care labels.

  • Loop Fold Care Labels – This type of label is designed to fold in half as a loop with 10mm sew space at each end so that it can be sewn into a seam. Both ends will need to be sewn in to avoid fraying. The printing ink is applied to one side of the fabric.  Typically we would print your branding on the upper portion of the label and washing/care instructions on the lower portion so that, once folded, the branding will appear on the front of the label and the washing/care instructions will appear on the reverse. Generally these labels will be supplied un-cut on a roll and you can simply cut them off as needed. Fabrics are available in white, cream and black polyester satin in a variety of widths.
Choice of care labels - loop fold care labels
  • 1 or 2 Sided Care Labels – These labels are supplied with cut and sealed ends so they will not fray and you will only have to sew one end into a seam. New legislation requires that care and content information is shown in the language of the country the goods are being sold into. Obviously if you are selling into multiple countries you may need to add several translations.

A 2 sided care label is ideal for this. We print on both sides of the fabric so you can keep the label size to a minimum. We can supply labels in booklet fold format to give you a short, neat label. Fabrics are available in white and black polyester satin.

Choice of care labels -1 or 2 sided care labels

For more information on care labelling guidelines take a look at the Textile Labelling Regulations from the Department for Business Innovation & Skills.

Choose Care Label Font

We use a digital printing process with a computer based design package. This means that when you come to choose the font styles for your labels you can be as imaginative as you like with your branding. We would usually suggest using something clear and simple (Arial or similar in style) for your care label font to make washing instructions and safety information as clear as possible for your customers.  Just let us know the washing instructions in words and we will add the corresponding symbols. Here is a useful link to www.care-labelling.co.uk where the symbols and meanings are explained.

Choose care label font - care labels

Choose Care Label Logo

Once you have chosen your care label font you may wish to add a logo/image to make your labels a little more individual. We have a wide range of logos/images on file which may be appropriate for you. To choose your care label logo from our selection just let us know the sort of image you would like and we can show you some options. If you spot something on our website just point it out and we can add it for you. A lot of the images we have can be filled with a colour to make your care label logo really stand out. We have a selection of ink colours for you to choose from on the website.

Choose care label logo

Choose Your Own Care Label Logo

Choose your own care label logo - simpleRather than adding one of our logos/images you can choose your own care label logo. Just send us your image file and we will check to see if it is suitable for printing. A high resolution jpg is ideal. Simple graphic images work best. We can add up to 3 ink colours to your label.

Add CE Information to Your Label

CE labelling is required if you are making and selling soft toys into EU countries. As the manufacturer/seller you will have to make sure that your products conform to EU safety legislation. You will need to complete the CE self-certification procedure in order to use the CE mark. Once you have done this we can add CE information to your label. You will usually be required to add contact details for traceability and relevant safety information/warnings. We can also add batch numbers if required.

For more information on responsibilities for toy manufacturers visit the Gov.uk website.

Add CE information to your label - CE label

Our Care Labels Conform to EU Legislation

As part of the CE labelling process you are required to make sure that your products meet safety requirements. The printing inks and fabrics we use have been independently tested for toxicity (EN71-3: 2013) to make sure that our care labels conform to EU legislation. We can supply a test certificate for your records.

Your Care Labels are Locally Sourced

Over the years we have put a lot of effort into researching and developing our products. The fabrics and inks we use have been thoroughly tested and carefully chosen with the aim of maintaining quality. Your care labels are locally sourced. We have a fabric supplier just 4 miles away from our Yorkshire base and our ink supplier is in Wales. We like to develop relationships with local suppliers wherever possible.

How Your Care Labels are Printed

Once you have sent us your ideas we will work with you to design and create your own customised labels. The digital printing process and computer based design package we use enable us to change layouts quickly and send you images for approval as we go through the design process with you. When you have approved your design it will be sent to our printer. The inks are applied to the label fabric using a thermal transfer process. If you would like to see how your care labels are printed please have a look at this video.

Examples of Care Labels Printed

Here are some examples of care labels printed for our customers. Both of these original logo designs were supplied by our customers then edited to make them suitable for printing. Simple graphic designs like these work extremely well. Fine details will look ok on paper but will often be lost when transferred to fabric. This is something to bear in mind when designing your care label logo.

Hello all,

We have just deployed our exciting new website.

We thought this might be a good opportunity to tell you a bit more about the things we like and anything that pops up that we think you might find interesting and useful.

Quite often our customers will send us their logo but not be sure of the font style they would like to go with it. When we get requests for “something quirky” or “something scripty” we love to try and find one that fits. During the working day you will often hear the phrase “Ooh that’s a nice font…must remember to write that one down”. In an effort to save on the cost of post-it notes (and maintain workplace tidiness) we thought this would be a good place to keep a memo.

We are also very fond of some of the lovely, bright colours in our ink range. Magenta and Pumpkin always look great, especially on a bright, white label. We also think they look good on our cream fabric. It’s the same ink colour but the darker fabric just gives the colours a little extra depth. We thought you might like to see the difference so we’ve taken some photos of each colour printed on a white or cream base and, for those of you in the designer world, we’ve picked out the closest Pantone reference for each.

It has been an interesting project for us. Some of the differences in shade are quite surprising. It certainly took a while looking through all the colour palettes to find the best matches. We know it’s difficult to tell from a screen what a colour will look like in real life so we thought this would be the best way to give you a more accurate idea. We also thought it might be useful if you want to match the colour of other branding items to your labels.

We are looking forward to keeping you updated with our other little projects and findings. If we can provide a bit of inspiration too we’ll be very happy.

Best wishes,

The Carelabels team
